Funky normals

I'm afraid to say that I'm a relative n00b when it comes to modeling with polygons. I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me out.

I haven't quite got this whole normals thing down. I'm trying to create some low poly game models. Sometimes everything goes smoothly, but sometimes I get these ugly dark patches that I just can't seem to get rid of. I know it has something to do with the way I have the normals set, but I can't quite figure out how to correct it. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:




For these shots, I selected "set to face" and then "average normals" under the "Edit Polygons --> Normals" menu. Other than the dark patches, this gives me the results I'm looking for. I've tried various settings under soften/harden, but it just seems to give me the same problem in even more awkward spots. I've tried editing with the "Vertex Normal Edit Tool," but I was only able to make things worse. "Reverse" and "Conform" seem to have no effect. I'm not really sure what other options I have. I'm currently working in Maya 7.0, but I had the same problem in 6.0 as well.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does anyone have any suggestions? Any advice would be appreciated.
